Next Archbishop of Denver Announced

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila of Denver and appointed Bishop James Golka, Bishop of the Colorado Springs Diocese, as successor.

Archbishop Aquila will formally introduce Archbishop-designate Golka at a media-only press conference. The announcement will be livestreamed at www.archden.org/live-events, inviting the faithful across Colorado to share in this moment of grace for our local Church.

We are very excited to welcome Archbishop-designate Golka to the Archdiocese of Denver!

About Archbishop-designate James R. Golka

On April 30, 2021, Pope Francis named him the third Bishop of the Diocese of Colorado Springs, succeeding the late Bishop Michael Sheridan. His episcopal ordination took place on June 29, 2021, at Holy Apostles Church in Colorado Springs, with Archbishop Samuel Aquila and then-Archbishop Christophe Pierre serving as co-consecrators. His episcopal motto is “Stewards of God’s Mysteries.”

You can read Archbishop-designate Golka’s full bio at the link below.

Archbishop-designate Golka will be installed as the sixth Archbishop of Denver on the Solemnity of the Annunciation, March 25. This sacred liturgy will mark a new chapter in the life of our archdiocese as we welcome our new shepherd. For more information on what happens next, click the button below.

As Archbishop Aquila prepares for retirement, he has reflected on his time leading the faithful in the Archdiocese of Denver. Read his full letter of gratitude at the link below.

May the Lord bless our archdiocese abundantly during this season of renewal. Please join us in extending a prayerful thank you to Archbishop Aquila and a warm welcome to Archbishop-designate Golka.
